Packing for Aruba? Here Are 7 Things You’ll Actually Need

Mar 26, 2025

If you’re heading to Aruba soon, you’ve made an excellent choice in selecting one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and inviting destinations. Aruba is truly a gem, with its pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and sunny climate. That said, it’s important to pack thoughtfully.  To make sure you’re fully prepared for everything the island has to offer, our expert travel planners here at VacationAruba have designed this short guide outlining the things you’re definitely going to need on the island.

1. Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Aruba is passionate about protecting its coral reefs, which is why it has, since 2019, banned the use of sunscreens containing oxybenzone, a chemical that is known to be detrimental to coral health. You must choose reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the island’s vibrant reefs. Look for sunscreens labeled “reef-safe” or “oxybenzone-free,” and check for ingredients such as non-nano zinc oxide. These products are widely available online and at eco-friendly stores.

Pro Tip: If you forget, some local stores stock reef-safe sunscreen, but they may be pricier. To avoid surprises, pack it ahead of time!

2. Reusable Bags and Water Bottles

Single-use plastics, including bags, straws, and certain utensils, are prohibited in Aruba to reduce pollution and protect the environment. Bringing reusable shopping bags is not only eco-friendly but also necessary for grocery shopping and souvenir hunting.

A reusable water bottle is essential, especially for excursions like ATV adventures through Arikok National Park or a day at Baby Beach. Sunshine on the island can be particularly intense, and as such, staying hydrated is crucial. Many hotels, restaurants, and beachside bars have refill stations or water coolers where you can top up your bottle.

3. Cool Clothing

Travel Clothing

Aruba’s semi-arid climate means you’ll not only experience abundant sunshine year-round but also intense UV exposure. Packing lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats can provide additional protection against the sun.

Opt for technical garments with a UPF rating for reliable UV protection. The fabrics of these articles of clothing are designed to block harmful UV rays from the sun, making them ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, snorkeling, or exploring Oranjestad’s colorful streets. At the very least, consider bringing bottoms and long-sleeved tops that are made of breathable natural fibers like cotton and linen to help you keep cool throughout the day. You should also bring the following items:

  • Wide-brimmed hats as shade for your face and neck
  • Rash guards for extra sun protection while swimming or paddleboarding
  • Light scarves that can double as wraps for cooler evenings

Don’t assume you’re good to go because you put on sunscreen. Even with sunscreen, the consistent trade winds in Aruba can make you forget how powerful the sun is. Covering up can prevent sunburn and keep you cool.

Casual wear is acceptable for most settings, but pack a few dressier outfits for upscale restaurants, casinos, and resorts. For dining experiences at restaurants like Barefoot Aruba or enjoying cocktails at a luxury lounge, consider resort-casual wear—think sundresses, linen shirts, and sandals.

4. Swimwear and Beach Essentials

Because Aruba has plenty of stunning beaches, you’ll likely spend a lot of time by or in the water. Pack a couple of swimsuits to ensure you always have a dry one ready. You also need a beach cover-up, flip-flops, and a microfiber beach towel that dries quickly. Some accommodations provide towels, but having your own makes impromptu beach visits easier.

If you love snorkeling, bring your own mask and snorkel. While rentals are available, having your personal gear ensures better fit and hygiene. Note that even if you’ve never done snorkeling before, Aruba’s clear waters teeming with marine life might just tempt you to try it. Spots like Boca Catalina and the Antilla Shipwreck offer unforgettable underwater views.

Other essentials:

  • Dry bag: Great for keeping your phone, wallet, and electronics safe from splashes during boat trips or snorkeling excursions.
  • Underwater phone case: Perfect for snapping pics while snorkeling at Mangel Halto or Tres Trapi.
  • A small backpack or beach bag: Useful for day trips and shopping excursions. Look for one with waterproof compartments for keeping your belongings safe during boat trips or water adventures.

Pro Tip: Pack a mesh gear bag for easy rinsing and drying after your beach adventures.

5. Travel Adapters and Electronics

Travel Packing

Aruba uses mostly Type A and Type B outlets, which are the same ones used in the United States and Canada, although many establishments also use Type F outlets, which are used in many countries in continental Europe. The standard voltage is 127 V at a frequency of 60 Hz, which is compatible with American electronics. If you’re traveling from elsewhere, ensure you have the appropriate adapters with you. Additionally, bring a portable charger for your devices—perfect for long days exploring the island’s hidden gems or taking photos of California Lighthouse at sunset.

You probably won’t forget your smartphone, but you might want to upgrade your storage. Aruba’s picturesque landscapes and colorful architecture offer countless photo opportunities. Make sure you have more than enough storage, and bring an extra memory card or a portable storage device, just in case. Don’t miss photo ops at Eagle Beach’s iconic fofoti trees or the colorful murals in San Nicolas.

6. Medications and First Aid

Medications and First Aid

Make a list of your prescription medications so you don’t forget, and make sure you bring a bit more than you need. A small first aid kit with basics like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and OTC pain relievers should also go with you everywhere. Aruba has many pharmacies, but having a kit on hand can be a lifesaver. Also don’t forget to bring your doctor’s prescription, just in case.

Pro Tip: Bring insect repellent as well. Aruba isn’t known for a high prevalence of mosquitoes, but having a repellant cream on hand can’t hurt, especially if you’ll be exploring the island at dawn or dusk. Choose eco-friendly repellents with essential oils like citronella or lemon eucalyptus to minimize ecological impact.

7. Documents and Money

Documents and Money

Make copies of important documents like your passport, travel insurance, and accommodation confirmations, and make sure to have them handy. Both physical and digital copies are recommended for added security.

When it comes to money, you can get by with credit cards because they are widely accepted across Aruba. Still, you should carry some cash for smaller purchases or tips. If you’re from the United States, take note that U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, so there’s no need to exchange currency.

The Best Time to Visit Aruba

The best time to visit Aruba really depends on what you’re looking for. If you want perfect weather and a lively atmosphere, the peak season from December to April is the way to go. This time of year also features exciting events like the Aruba Carnival in January and February.

The shoulder season from May to August is a great option if you’re after a more relaxed vibe with fewer crowds and better prices. Plus, you can catch fun music festivals like the Soul Beach Music Festival in May.

For a quieter experience, consider the off-peak season from September to November. Aruba’s location outside the hurricane belt means it stays stable and sunny even during hurricane season, making it a great choice for a peaceful getaway.
